Installation of interpretive screens

Interpretive screens around the site will give a two-dimensional representation of the houses on the site at the beginning of the 20th century by showing building elevations, windows and doors. Installation of the interpretive screens will require the closure of Gloucester Street on Friday 16th October and closure of the footpath Monday 19th October. Built and YHA NSW apologise for any inconvenience to local residents and businesses and appreciate their co-operation and understanding throughout the construction phase.

Occupation Certificate was received on 13th October and practical completion is expected any day soon. YHA expects the hostel to open at the end of the month.

Last crane to be removed

The remaining crane will be removed from the site on Thursday 1st October requiring the closure of Gloucester Street between Cumberland Street and the Cahill Expressway. Traffic controllers will be on hand to assist any residents with alternative parking or access to their properties. Built and YHA NSW apologise for any inconvenience to local residents and businesses and appreciate their co-operation and understanding throughout the construction phase.

The site is very busy at the moment with construction in its final weeks. The 106 bedrooms are complete and some furniture has already been delivered. The finishing touches to corridors and public areas are underway. Kitchens are being installed and connected to services. Most of the major services have been commissioned. External works are progressing well with the laneways re-surfaced, the remnants cleared of debris and the footpath and curb re-alignments largely complete. Sydney Harbour YHA is expected to accept its first guest in early November.

Final weeks of construction

The site is in the final weeks of construction prior to practical completion in early October. Internal work is in full swing with flooring and joinery being installed. The majority of bedrooms are now complete. Work has commenced on the foyer and reception area. The external works associated with the laneways and footpaths has commenced. The Big Dig Archaeology Education centre is progressing well. Many of the interpretation elements are now in production and are expected to be installed on the site in October.

The majority of scaffolding and hoardings have now been removed across the site, revealing not just the finished exteriors of the buildings but also the archaeological remnants after almost a year under cover! Interior work such as installing flooring, tiling, fixtures etc is progressing well. External works have commenced on the stairways providing access to the site from the footpaths and work will soon commence on the internal laneways.
Sydney Harbour YHA is expected to open in November 2009. Bookings have opened on www.yha.com.au for December 18th 2009 onwards – NYE is all but booked out already! Earlier dates will be released when we have a confirmed opening date.

Bridge and stairs installed

The scaffolding is being removed across the site revealing the façade of the buildings. The final glazing elements are about to be installed making the YHA watertight. The link bridge and stairs are now installed and work continues on the Education Centre. Internal finishing is progressing well and YHA expects the hostel to open in November 2009.

Scaffolding to be removed

The scaffolding is starting to be removed from the south building, revealing the finished façade. Work is continuing on the façade of the north building. The YHA is expected to be watertight in the near future. The link bridge and stairs are now installed. Internal finishing is progressing well and YHA expects the hostel to open in November 2009.

Construction update

The structure for the bridge linking the two hostel buildings is now installed. The façade of the south building is largely complete. Upcoming works include finalising the roof over the bridge, installing windows and completing the façade of the north building.
